Meriden Skatepark

The Meriden Skatepark, located on the corner of Coe Avenue and
Hamilton Street, is now open (weather permitting). Operation hours:
School Days ... 2:00pm - Dusk
Non-School Days ... 11:00am - Dusk

The skatepark will NOT be open: 5/9, 5/30, and 5/31.

Indoor Swim Program

The Maloney High School pool's schedule follows:

Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays: 6:30-7:45PM
Saturdays and Sundays: 12noon-3:45PM
[pool closed: 5/9, 5/29, 5/30, and 5/31]
(for daily updates, call 630-4279)

All interested participants must possess a valid 2004
pool pass. A pass costs $5.00 for adults and $1.00
for children ages 17 and under; they are good for
the calendar year in which they are purchased,
including the outdoor public swim at Hubbard Park.
To receive a pass, potential recipients must bring,
in-person, proof of Meriden residency to the office of
Meriden Parks and Recreation, 460 Liberty St, 630-4259

'Creatures From My Garden' + Students' Artwork

Two great presentations for you to enjoy ...

Origami from the collection of Connecticut resident
Angela Arrey-Wastavino is featured at the Meriden
Public Library. The exhibit includes flowers, birds
and insects created using the art of folding paper.

Art created by Wilcox Technical School students is the
subject of this month long exhibit at the Meriden Public
Library. Dozens of works in a variety of media - including
pen-and-ink, watercolor and pencil drawings - are featured.

Spring Booksale

The Friends of Meriden Public Library are the host of this
sale taking place at the library's Friends Room (side entrance):
       Monday                      10:00am-8:30pm.  Preview sale-Members
                                   only; membership available at the door
       Tuesday and Wednesday       10:00am-8:30pm
       Thursday through Saturday   10:00am-4:30pm
Thousands of books will be offered for sale at a price of
one dollar per hardcover and fifty cents per paperback;
specially priced sets, as well as children's books, videos,
records and CDs, will also be available. Donations welcomed.

Local Author Autographs His New Book

Meriden Public Library will host a special appearance by Meriden
author Rev. Robert Prescott-Ezickson at 12 noon, today. Reverend
Prescott-Ezickson, pastor of First Baptist Church, will sign copies
of 'What Jesus Did: The Answer To WWJD.' The program is free and
you are invited to attend. Bring a bag lunch - refreshments served.

Bilingual Reading and Discussion Series of Latino Literature

Meriden Public Library hosting of a five-part book discussion called
'Stories of Love, Life, and Work' continues tonight at 7:00pm. Sponsored
by Human Pursuits: The Western Humanities Concern and the Natural
Endowment for the Humanitites, the series features five award-winning
books written by Latin American authors. The series is moderated by
Dr. Angela Arrey-Wastavino. The schedule of discussions is as follows:
         Monday,  April 5  at 7:00pm    Odyssey to the North, by Mario Bencastro
         Tuesday, April 27 at 12noon    Peel My Love Like An Onion, by Ana Castillo
         Tuesday, May 11   at 7:00pm    America's Dream, by Esmeralda Santiago
         Monday,  May 24   at 7:00pm    The Aguero Sisters, by Cristina Garcia
         Tuesday, June 15  at 12noon    News of the Kidnapped, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Spanish or English editions of the selected books and study guides are
available on loan and absolutely free to participants prior to discussion
dates through the public library. Participants are expected to read the
book before attending the bimonthly discussion. Because the scholar is
bilingual, discussion sessions can happen in the language requested by
the audience, whether English or Spanish. This is not a lecture series.

History Of The Connecticut Lottery

Meriden Public Library hosts this program at 7:00pm, tonight.
Bill Hennessey, Lottery Ambassador, will be the guest speaker.
Now in its 30th year, the Connecticut Lottery Corporation has
contributed nearly $5 billion to the state for programs and
services such as education, public health / safety and more.
The event is free. Door prizes + a raffle are part of the program.

History Of The CT 29th Colored Regiment C. V. Infantry

Meriden Public Library hosts a special appearance by Emanuel Gomez,
president, and Albert Mero, vice-president, of the Descendants of the
this infantry group at 7:00pm, tonight. They will discuss the history
of the Regiment and the important role that African Americans played
in the Civil War. The organization's mission is to commemorate the
memory and contributions of African American, Native American and
Caucasian officers, throughout CT, who served on the Union side.
The program is free and the public is invited to attend.

Meriden Raiders Junior Football and Cheerleading Sign-Ups

Place: Washington Park - Pete Sini Field House
Time: 5:00 - 7:00pm this eve
Cost: Football - $85.00; Cheerleading - $70.00
Divisions: Varies for ages 7-15 (8 up for cheerleaders)
Sign-Up Requirements: bring the original wallet sized
birth certificate, medical consent dated after January 1, 2004,
(must be original form signed by a doctor), 2003-2004 original
report card, parent or legal guardian consent. Please note:
football players must be present for weigh-in (at least 45lbs).
Payment plans are accepted; details discussed at sign-up.

Hershey Track and Field Youth Program

The City of Meriden and the Meriden Boys and Girls Club
invite youths age 9-14 to participate in this local Meriden
competition. The event is held at the Platt High School
track with registrations from 9:45-10:15am, and the
competition beginning at 10:30am. All participants
receive certificates and refreshments. Winners may
qualify for the state championship in July.

Author Signs World War II Pilot's Book Publication

As the nation gets ready to honor the 63rd anniversary of America's
entry into World War II because of the Pearl Harbor sneak attack,
Harold I. Rochette will be signing his book, 'The 8th Air Force
Lottery', at Meriden Public LIbrary at 7:00pm, tonight. Rochette
was co-pilot of the World War II B-17 bomber named "Sneakin'
Deacon" and he flew in 31 missions over Germany in 1944.
The subtitle for his bookis 'Winners Are Losers, Losers Are Winners,'
referring to the fact that those chosen for a mission might lose and
be shot down. Rochette and his wife, both originally from Middletown,
settled in Meriden in 1948. He is Meriden Antique Veterans' treasurer.

Meriden Memorial Day Parade

The City of Meriden and the Meriden United Veterans Council
present this 2004 event starting at 10:30am at Washington Park
and proceeding to City Hall via Liberty, Cottage and East Main.
There's a short ceremony at City Hall following the parade.
Please come and show support for those who have sacrificed
so much to protect our country's freedom. Groups wishing to
march in this festive and patriotic event are asked to call the
