The vehicle access road to Castle Craig is open daily from
10:00am - 4:45pm. The road is closed on inclement weather days.

Meriden Skatepark

The Meriden Skatepark, located on the corner of Coe Avenue and
Hamilton Street, is open for the 2004 season (weather permitting):

School Days ... 2:00pm - Dusk
Non-School Days ... 11:00am - Dusk


The skatepark is NOT open 6/20 in observance of Father's Day.

Indoor Swim Program

The Maloney High School pool's schedule follows:

Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays: 6:30-7:45PM
Saturdays and Sundays: 12noon-3:45PM
(for daily updates, call 630-4279)

All interested participants must possess a valid 2004
pool pass. A pass costs $5.00 for adults and $1.00
for children ages 17 and under; they are good for
the calendar year in which they are purchased,
including the outdoor public swim at Hubbard Park.
To receive a pass, potential recipients must bring,
in-person, proof of Meriden residency to the office of

Hubbard Park Entertainment Series

The new season kicks off at the James J. Barry bandshell
from 6:00 - 9:00pm, tonight. Bands from the city's four
secondary schools (Maloney, Platt, Lincoln and Washington)
will be in performance in addition to a combination band
of the city's eight elementary schools. The show is free
to the public with refreshments available for purchase.

CT Trails Day

A special historical hike will be held at Hubbard Park today in
conjunction with the Connecticut Forest and Park Association's
Connecticut Trails Days. Interested participants are asked to
meet in the pool parking lot at 12:00noon for the two hour
round-trip hike to Castle Craig. Information will be presented
on the park's history, design, and uses, particularly in relation to
Frederick Law Olmsted. The hike is moderately difficult, so wear
comfortable, sturdy footwear and bring a beverage to drink.

Famous Sports Figures' Portraits Featured

Portraits of famous American sports figures by Meriden artist
Derek Andrews are the subject of a month-long exhibit at
Meriden Public Library now through the end of the month.
Over two dozen are displayed, including baseball greats Derek Jeter,
Barry Bonds, Nomar Garcia Parra, Mark McGuire, Pedro Martinez,
Jim Rice, Roger Clemens, Jason Giambi, Mike Piazza and Sammy Sosa;
football greats Jerry Rice and Donovan McNabb; and basketball
great Diana Taurasi. You're welcome to see how this 34 year old
graphite artist convinces the audience that 'flesh and fabric can
be brouhgt to life on paper.' Public viewing during library hours:
Monday-Wednesday, 10am-9pm; Thursday-Saturday, 10am-5pm.

Financial Aid and College Admissions Workshop

Meriden Public Library hosts a free workshop on the college admissions
process and the fundamentals of financial aid for both students and
parents at 7:00pm, tonight. Brenda White, assistant director of the
Connecticut Talent Assistance Cooperative Educational Opportunity Center
will be the guest speaker. White will explain exactly how to apply to
colleges and how to apply for various types of financial aid sources
available, as well as eligibility and deadlines. This is a free program.

Bilingual Reading and Latino Literature Discussion

Meriden Public Library concludes its five-part book discussion
called 'Stories of Love, Life and Work' at 12 noon, today.
Sponsored by Human Pursuits: The Western Humanities Concern
and the National Endowment for the Humanities, the series
features five award-winning books written by Latin American
authors. The series is moderated by Dr. Angela Arrey-Wastavino.
Today's session, the final of the series, features a discussion
of 'News of the Kidnapped' by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This
program is free to the public - everyone is invited to attend.

Public Swim

The 2004 Outdoor Public Swim Program at the Hubbard Park
begins today. Daily updates on hours of operation can be found
by calling the Recreation Activity Line (203) 630-4279.
All interested participants must possess a valid 2004 pool
pass which is available for purchase at the Parks and Rec
office. Passes cost $5.00 for adults and $1.00 for children
ages 17 and under. Potential recipients must come to the office
in-person and bring proof of Meriden residency to receive a pass.
Passes are valid for the calendar year in which they are purchased.

Tennis Lessons

Tennis lessons for beginners are offered at Washington Park.
Under the director of USPTR-certified instructor Karen Whiting,
they will focus on strokes, balance, footwoork, and system of
scoring. Age groups will meet at the following times:
7-9 (1:00pm), 10-13 (2:00pm), and 14-18 (3:00pm)
The cost for the week is $30.00, and only six participants
will be accepted per age group. Participants can register at

Summer Playground Program

Functions are at Baldwin Pond, Ceppa Field, and Habershon Park.
Children ages 6-12 are invited to experience fun-filled days of
games, activities, crafts, and field trips. The playgrounds are
open Monday-Friday, 8:30am-3:00pm. There is no cost except
for field trips. Interested participants can register at the three

'A Conversation About Elderhostel'

George and Betty Thomson, Elderhostel Ambassadors, are the
guest speakers at the Meriden Public Library at 12noon, today.
Together, the Meriden residents have attended over 60 Elderhostel
programs. Several of their trips have been to Europe, including
five biking tours through Holland, England, the Danube River area,
Denmark and Italy's Po Valley. They recently returned from four
consecutive Elderhostel courses in California. The program is
free and the public is invited to attend - bring a bag lunch.
