Special Landfill Hours for Disposal of Leaves
The city's landfill on Evansville Avenue will open for the
disposal of leaves and brush only, Monday through Saturday
from 7:30am until 12noon beginning Monday, November 1st
until further notice. (Please note, the landfill will close on
Thursday, November 11 for the Veteran's Day holiday and on
Thanksgiving Day, November 25th.) Leaves must be in bio-
degradable paper bags or emptied from trash bags/containers.
Brush should be manageable length and no larger than 6 inches
in diameter. No root balls or grass clippings will be accepted.
There is no charge for disposing of brush and/or any leaves.
This service is for Meriden residents with proper I.D. in non-
commercial vehicles only. The landfill maintains its regular
hours for residents to discard bulky waste. For more info, call

Meriden Men's Basketball League
Team registrations for the 2004-2005 season are now being
accepted. The entrance fee is $450.00 per team. Games will
begin in late November and run through March 2005. Teams
interested in obtaining a registration packet should contact

Indoor Public Swim Program
The 2004-2005 weekly schedule takes place
at the Maloney High School pool as follows:
Mon, Wed, Thur ... 6:30 - 7:45pm
Sat + Sun ... 12noon - 3:45pm
(closed school holidays and/or snow days)

Special: An adaptive swim program will take
place 6:30-7:45pm on these Wednesday eves:
11/10, 11/17, 12/1, 12/8, and 12/15.
This program will allow students with special
needs to work with a certified physical therapist.
All interested participants must possess a valid 2004
pool pass ($5.00 adults, $1.00 for children 17 and under).
Potential recipients must come in-person and bring proof
of Meriden residency to receive a pass at the office of:

Co-Ed Adult Volleyball Program
Organized recreational volleyball games for adults ages 18 and
older take place at Lincoln Middle School from 6:00 - 9:00PM.
The program runs through April 12th, except for school holidays
and snow days. The registration fee is $25.00, which includes
program inclusion for the year plus a shirt. This fee can be
paid onsite any night the program is in session. Healthy fun ...

Turkey Hunt
Tom the Turkey is hiding somewhere in Meriden, hoping to survive
the Thanksgiving season without being discovered! Children ages
5-13 are invited to search for Tom's whereabouts using clues given
each Tuesday and Thursday on the Recreation Activity Line (630-4279).
Special 'bonus' clues can be found on City of Meriden TV, Channel 14.
The first child to locate Tom and return him to the Parks/Rec office
will receive a Thanksgiving turkey and other prizes. Happy Hunting!!!

StoryLines New England
Get acquainted with some fascinating books that spotlight New England
values and culture in a new radio series called 'StoryLines New England',
a joint presentation of Meriden Public Library and WPKT-FM, 90.5.
This program is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities
and organized by the American Library Association. The series debuted
October 16 and can be heard for the following 11 weeks at 8:00pm, Saturdays.
Each StoryLines America program focuses on a special book (limited copies
available at the library) which you can read, listen to guests talk about it
on the air and then call-in and share your comments on a toll-free number.

Anniversary Party features 'Oktoberfest'
The Friends of Meriden Public Library is hosting an anniversary
party at the library at 2:00pm. The Connecticut Entertainment
Band (also known as the Riverboat Ramblers) shall perform
Oktoberfest music at the free event - everyone's invited to attend.
John Banker and three musicians, dressed in authentic Lederhosen,
will present authentic German folk and dance music spiced with
traditional Oktoberfest drinking songs. The musicians will perform
on cornet, accordion, tuba, clarinet, and trombone. Highlights
include selections on German Handbells, Shuhplatller dancing and
yodeling. The vocalist will perform in German and English.

Meriden author Lori Avocato
will sign copies of her latest
novel at Meriden Public Library at 12 noon, today. Meet the
teacher/writer and former U.S. Air Force registered nurse who
will feature one of her 14 books - this one about a burned-out
nurse who becomes a medical insurance fraud investigator only
to be yanked back into the nursing field by an experience hunk
of an investigator who she just can't say no to - until ...
This is a free program and the public is invited to attend.
You may bring a bag lunch and enjoy cookies and hot
beverages provided by the library. Seating is limited, act today.

The Meriden Public Library has added a wireless network
to its computer services. This feature allows individuals to
bring in their own laptops and use Internet services here.
In order to connect, you must have an 802.11b wireless adapter
to be compliant. The connecting device must use dynamic DNS
and DHCP settings. There's no need to sign up - nor any fee.
