Indoor Public Swim

The 1999-2000 Indoor Public Swim Program at Maloney High continues!
Interested participants must possess a valid 1999 pool tag which
is available at the Parks and Recreation Department office.
The pool's weekly schedule will be as follows:

Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays ... 6:30-7:45pm
Saturdays and Sundays ... 12:00-3:45pm
(Pool normally unavailable Tue. and Fri.)
[UPDATE: pool open during Christmas vacation week ...
although closed Dec. 23, 25 and 26, it will be open
December 27th through the 30th from 12-3:45pm
and closed again on January 1st and 2nd 2000]

There will be no public swim on school holidays nor snow days,

Meriden Men's Basketball League

From December 1, 1999 through early March 2000, you can freely
watch Meriden resident teams (18 and older) compete on area courts:

Mondays @ Washington Middle School, 1225 North Broad Street, Meriden
Tuesdays and Thursdays @ YMCA, 110 West Main Street, Meriden
Wednesdays @ Lincoln Middle School, 164 Centennial Avenue, Meriden

Games are at *6:30pm and 7:45pm Mon-Thur (*only 6:30pm on Tuesdays)

Co-Ed Adult Volleyball Program

Organized recreational volleyball games for adults ages 18 and older
continues to take place at Lincoln Middle School from 6-9pm until 4/11/00.
The program will not run, however, on school holidays and snow days!
A one-time $20.00 registration fee can be paid at the program or at

Thursdays, December 1999

Meriden Game Club

Boys and girls ages 7-14 are invited to learn new skills and improve
their existing skills in chess, cards and board games. The group will
meet every Thursday from 3-5pm at St. Mary's School. There's no fee to
participate and children may register for the club during program hours.
The club will not meet on holidays, school vacation days or snow days.

Holiday House Decorating Contest

Enter your Meriden household today by calling the
Parks and Recreation Department office at 630-4259
with the address and phone number to be entered!
Judging takes place on December 16th and 17th.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries
in the following categories: 'Most Creative,'
'Most Traditional' + 'Best Display of Holiday Spirit.'
A special award will be given to the Meriden
neighborhood that best exemplifies the holiday spirit.
Winners become part of the 12/22 'Silver Lights' Bus Tour!

Santa Letters

Santa Claus will once again be responding to Christmas letters this year!
Children ages 1-12 are invited to send their wish lists and letters
through the U.S. Postal Service mail system or bring them to either the
Colony Street post office or the Parks and Recreation Department office.
Address letters to 'Santa Claus, North Pole' - include the child's full
name and address (deadline 12/21). No postage is required.

Meriden Soccer Club Try-Outs

Boys ages 12-14 are invited to compete for positions on the
Meriden Soccer Club's U12 and U14 spring travel teams.
Try-outs will be held at Kronenberger Park on the 4th and 11th.
U12 tryouts are from 9:30am-12pm, with U14 tryouts 12:30-3pm.

Meriden Land Trust

An all-volunteer group consisting of
conservationists, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts
invite you to join them at the City Engineer's office
in city hall as they meet every second Wednesday at 7p.m.

Focusing on protecting the natural habitat of Meriden
including its wetlands, wildlife habitat, trap-rock ridges
trails, farmland, historic, scenic and recreational areas;
collectively, we can all help maintain Meriden's balance
between the rural and urban aspects of the community.

Christmas In Our Hometown

Meriden's downtown Christmas tree will be lit as part of
the Second Annual Christmas in our Hometown celebration.
The event begins at 7pm at Midtown Plaza and features
entertainment by the Castle Craig Players, community caroling,
refreshments and special childrens' gifts. A co-sponsor
of this event includes the Downtown Service Commission.

12th Annual Christmas In the Park

Time: 12-4pm ... Place: Hubbard Park
Activities: musical entertainment from Meriden
school, church and community groups, a visit from
Santa and other holiday characters, sleigh/wagon rides,
the YMCA arts and crafts tent, ice sculpting, dancing
and other holiday entertainment. Also, Hubbard Park's
noted 'Festival of Silver Lights' will be on display.
The event is free to the public; refreshments available!

'Silver Lights' Bus Tour

Don't miss this exciting opportunity to view the very best
Meriden has to offer in Christmas lights and decorations!
Guided bus tours of the city's top holiday attractions
will leave the Meriden Senior Center on West Main Street.
Featured destinations include Hubbard Park, City Hall,
Broad Street, Downtown locations and the 1999 Holiday
House Decorating Contest winners and runner-ups.
Residents must register between December 1-20th
with the Parks and Recreation Department to participate.
Tours will be offered free-of-charge at 6 and 7:30pm.
Refreshments will be served at the Meriden Senior Center.

Millennium Activities

The City of Meriden Celebrate 2000 Committee will present
a variety of millennium activities on the last day of 1999.
'Times Square, Meriden' will take place at City Hall
from 8pm to 1am and feature fireworks, entertainment, a
jumbo screen with a live feed from New York's Times Square,
souvenirs and refreshments. The 'Meriden Millennium Ball'
will take place at Crescent Park from 7pm-1am and feature
a complete formal dinner, music by Soul Sound Revue and all
the activites of 'Times Square, Meriden.' Please call
