Indoor Swim Program

Maloney High School's pool will be open for public swim:

Monday, Wednesdays, Thursdays: 6:30-7:45pm
Saturdays and Sundays: 12:00-3:45pm

(closed holidays / snow days unless otherwise noted)

special schedule during spring vacation week:

The pool's open 12noon-3:45pm Monday-Thursday
The pool's closed on 4/18, 4/19, and 4/20


Daily updates are availabe on the Parks and Recreation

You must possess a valid 2003 tag - cost is $1.00 for
children ages 17 and under and $5.00 for adults.
Potential recipients must come in-person and bring
proof of Meriden residency to receive a pass at the

Co-Ed Adult Volleyball Program

Organized recreational volleyball games for adults ages 18 and
older take place at Lincoln Middle School from 6:00 - 9:00PM.
The program runs through April 8, 2003, except on
school holidays and snow days. A one-time $20.00
registration fee can be paid at the program or the

Spring Vacation Week Activities

Check out these exciting activities during your vacation:

Dance Lessons - Come explore the exciting world of dance!
Lessons will take place at Miss Laura's School of Dance
located at 626 East Main Street. Children ages 6 and older
are invited to learn ballet, jazz, hip-hop and other dance steps.
Lessons will run Monday - Thursday from 9:00-10:00AM.
Interested participants must register at the Parks and Recreation
office between April 1st - 11th. The cost is $5.00. There are
only a limited number of openings, so please register early.

Baseball Clinic - Whether you play in Little League
or the backyard, this is your opportunity to improve your
baseball skills. Children ages 8-12 will be taught such
fundamentals as hitting, pitching and fielding. The clinic
will take place Monday-Thursday from 10am-12pm at
Washington Park. Interested participants must register at the
Parks and Recreation office between April 1st - 11th. Cost is $20.00
which includes transportation and admission to HomeRun USA on
April 15th and to the Norwich Navigators game on April 16th.
Space in the camp is extremely limited so please register early!

Navigators trip - The Recreation Division will be
sponsoring a trip to Dodd Stadium on Wednesday, April 16th
to see the Norwich Navigators play a 12:35pm game against
the New Haven Ravens. The bus will leave Washington Park
at 10:30am and return immediately following the game's end.
Interested participants must register at the Parks and Rec
office by April 14th. The cost is $10.00 per person.

2003 Easter Egg Hunt

The Easter Bunny will be at the Hubbard Park bandshell
to give children an early start to their Easter egg
collecting this year. The following chart indicates
the time each age group will be participating:
        Age         Time
          1-3        10:00AM
          4-5        10:30AM
          6-7        11:00AM
          8-10       11:30AM

Children are asked to please bring a bag or basket for
egg collecting. The event will be held rain or shine.

Tryouts and draft for the South Meridn Youth League
Babe Ruth Division take place 3:00PM at Habershon Park.
Realizing teenagers deserve a great place to play ball,
debut (*16-18 year-old division) AND a new 13 year-old
'Prep' Team will be offered (*based on interest level).
Of course, there's still the 13-15 Year-old division!
Bring a $45.00 check and copy of birth certificate.

Library's Centennial

The Meriden Public Library celebrates its 100th anniversary
beginning at 6:30pm tonight with a special Centennial event.
A concert by Connecticut Bristol Old Tyme Fiddler's club follows
at 7:00pm, and a centennial cake will be served after the concert.
The concert is in memory of Mr. John De Maria - the program is
one in a yearlong series of special events and exhibits in celebration
of the local library's centennial. Everyone is invited to attend. For

Book Discussion at Public Library

Meriden Public Library continues its four-part book discussion
series on 'Women and Victorian Culture' at 12 noon, today. The
free series is moderated by Dr. Virginia Hale, retired emerita,
University of Hartford, and is sponsored by Time for Ideas in
Libraries, a program of the Connecticut Humanities Council and
co-sponsored locally by the Augusta Curtis Cultural Center, Inc.
The library has multiple copies of the books available now for
borrowing, but it is not necessary to read the books to attend
the discussion. The schedule is as follows:

Tuesday, April 22: Mill on the Floss, by George Eliot
Tuesday, May 13: Tess of the D'Urbervilles, by Thomas Hardy
Tuesday, June 3: The Eustace Diamonds, by Anthony Trollope

Arthritis Pain Management Seminar

The Arthritis Foundation and the Meriden Public Library will
co-sponsor a program on arthritis pain management at the library,
7:00pm, tonight. The seminar also features information about the
Silver Sneakers exercise program. Susan Nesci, MS, MA, from Meriden
and program director for the foundation, will introduce exercise and
relaxation techniques for pain management in the 'Break the Arthritis
Pain Cycle' seminar. Cynthia Swift from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield
will further describe the Silver Sneakers exercise program for seniors.
The program is free and open to the public. It is one in a yearlong series
of special events and exhibits in celebration of the Meriden Public Library’s

Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27, 2003

25th Annual Meriden Daffodil Festival

Hubbard Park is the place to be from 10am-9pm Saturday the 26th,
and from 10am-5pm on Sunday the 27th! The festival features
amusement rides, continuous musical entertainment, a parade,
a craft fair, fireworks, a road race, special events, various
demonstrations, over 40 different food vendors, and, oh yes,
over 600,000 daffodils in bloom!!! By the way, there are even
pre-festival activities - here are some of the prominent events:

           4/23   -   Little Miss Daffodil crowning (6:30PM)

Evora Jordan autographs 'Tainted Sand'

Meriden Public Library hosts a special appearance by Connecticut
author Evora Jordan starting at 7:00pm, tonight. Jordan will sign
copies of 'Tainted Sand', a work of fiction that was inspired by
a true murder mystery. She will also describe how she did her
research into this crime, the investigation proper, and how she
developed this incident into a ficitonal murder mystery. The
booksigning is free and the public is invited to attend. It is
one in a year-long series of special events in celebration of the
Meriden Public Library’s Centennial. Light refreshments will be
